Limited Edition of 100 fountain pens world-wide. In 1991 Sailor commemorated its 80th Anniversary with an exciting edition in wood. The pen model, called Sailor 80, is similar in form to the successful Profit. It is in fact a larger and more substantial fountain pen and the flagship in the Sailor range of full size pens. Through a fruitful working relationship between Sailor Japan and Classic Pens, the LB1 Nagahara series was developed and launched in 2003. The pen is based on the Sailor 80 model, and it is crafted out of quality acrylic in pearlized celadon green, vermillion and ebony marble. The series comprised 100 hand-crafted fountain pens. The LB1 Nagahara pens were offered in a choice of two very exclusive nibs created by Mr. Nobuyoshi Nagahara and in precious 21K solid gold. These exclusive nibs were the hand crafted Naginata Cross Emperor and the hand tuned Naginata Togi.
Mr. Nobuyoshi Nagahara, the legendary nib designer and craftsman, joined Sailor in 1946, at the age of 14. He has dedicated his work to make a better nib and this culminated in exclusive and very efficient writing units. His most famous nibs are the Naginata Cross Emperor and the Naginata Togi.
Classic Pens pays homage to Mr. Nobuyoshi Nagahara by naming its first LB series in his honor.
The Naginata Cross Emperor nib has the normal vertical slit from iridium tip to breather hole as well as a horizontal slit across the iridium. These slits, together with a gold bar above the nib, ensure smooth and efficient writing. The line width is very broad and a little wet. Every nib is both hand crafted and tuned by Mr. Nagahara.
Naginata is a type of long spear, Togi means to sharpen the blade. Together they describe the shape of the nib tipping material, which is similar to the spear blade finely shaped at the pointed end, more rounded towards the base. The line width varies depending on the angle the pen is held. At high angle the line width is fine, as the angle reduces the line increases to medium, finally to broad. Every nib is tuned by Mr. Nagahara.
The LB1 Nagahara pens are housed in a hand made gift box. The series is official, the pens are accompanied by a Sailor warranty as well as a certificate of authenticity by Classic Pens.
The list price in the USA in 2003 was $795 for the pens fitted with the Cross Emperor nib and $595 for those fitted with the Togi nib. The LB1 Nagahara series sold out quickly. The pens are today in high demand and values have increased above the original 2003 list price.
